All eligible members of the B.C. Wildfire Service and the provincial Forestry Ministry have joined the ongoing B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) strike, the union confirmed on Wednesday, Oct. 22. This escalation brings more than 25,000 public-sector employees across over 550 worksites into job action province-wide. Despite the strike, the Forestry Ministry says wildfire response remains unaffected, with essential services in place. Mediation between the BCGEU and the province began Oct. 18 under mediators Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers, as the labour dispute enters its eighth week.

Wildfire Smoke Triggers Air Quality Alerts Across B.C.

Environment Canada has re-issued and expanded air quality statements across much of B.C. as wildfire smoke spreads through the province. The alerts now cover the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, and Okanagan, with smoke expected to persist for the next 48 hours. Heat warnings are also in effect for regions including Kamloops, Ashcroft, and Bella Coola, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s. Officials warn smoke conditions can change rapidly, posing health risks to vulnerable groups such as seniors, children, and those with medical conditions. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity, with a gradual cooling trend expected by the weekend.

White Rock hillside fire swiftly contained by crews

Fire crews in White Rock, B.C., contained a brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31) on a steep hillside near Marine Drive, west of Nichol Road. White Rock Fire Rescue and the B.C. Wildfire Service tackled the 0.9-hectare blaze with both ground crews and helicopters. Marine Drive was temporarily closed, but no homes were damaged and no evacuations were required. By 2 p.m., officials confirmed the fire was in the cleanup stage and later listed as under control. The cause remains under investigation.
