White Rock man jailed three years for sex assaults

A 60-year-old White Rock man, Darren Robert Sorensen, has been sentenced to three years in prison and placed on the national sex offender registry for 20 years after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in 2022. The B.C. Supreme Court ruled that Sorensen exploited the victim, who considered him a trusted family friend, while she was intoxicated and vulnerable in her own home. Despite his clean record and low risk of reoffending, the court noted Sorensen showed limited remorse and imposed additional conditions, including a DNA order, weapons ban, and no-contact order.

White Rock Thanksgiving Food Drive Seeks Volunteers

The 2025 BC Thanksgiving Food Drive in White Rock and South Surrey is seeking volunteers to help local families in need. Organized by the LDS Church in partnership with Sources South Surrey/White Rock Food Bank, the drive runs September 14–20, with home donation pickups on September 20. Volunteers will distribute donation bags and collect non-perishable food items. Nearly 1,000 people rely on the food bank each week, and organizers urge the community to donate food, money, or time to help fight local hunger. Expired items cannot be accepted.

Seagull Returns After 24 Years in White Rock

A Glaucous-winged gull rescued and rehabilitated by the Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. in 2000 has been spotted twice in White Rock in 2024. First seen in February and recaptured by Environment and Climate Change Canada researchers, the gull was fitted with new identification bands. Its second sighting on September 16 confirms decades-long survival in the wild. The Salish Sea Gull Project, part of a larger marine bird monitoring initiative, tracks such sightings to support conservation and ecosystem health. The public is encouraged to report banded gull sightings to aid research.

Surrey’s gathering follows on August 29 at Holland Park, offering support services, meals, and remembrance activities. The events come as B.C. continues to face a toxic drug crisis, with 915 deaths reported in the first half of 2025, making Surrey the second-highest city in the province for fatalities.

Rotary’s Iconic White Rock Book Sale at Risk

The White Rock Rotary Book Sale, a 42-year community tradition, returns August 22 at Centennial Park with more than 40,000 books on offer. However, organizers warn this may be the final edition. The City of Surrey has given notice for Rotary to vacate the South Surrey Fieldhouse, where donations are sorted and stored. Without the space, the twice-annual fundraiser—which supports local charities—faces an uncertain future. Petitions are being circulated to urge the city to grant Rotary a new lease.

White Rock Petition Urges Amalgamation with Surrey City

An online petition is calling for White Rock to amalgamate with Surrey, citing concerns over transparency, rising property costs, and slow permitting in the seaside city. Launched by local business leaders and residents under the name Concerned Residents and Business Leaders of White Rock, the petition argues Surrey’s larger systems would deliver better governance, improved public services, and more efficient use of tax dollars. Petition starter Avtar Gill reported 215 signatures by midday August 18. White Rock officials said they are monitoring the petition but offered no further comment, while Surrey has not yet responded.

White Rock’s New Splash Pad Opens at Centennial Park

White Rock will unveil its new Generations Playground splash pad at Centennial Park on August 19 at noon. Designed for all ages and abilities, the water play area features spray cannons, a dumping bucket, ground sprays, and a spray tunnel. Backed by the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation and White Rock Firefighters Charity Association, the project was built by GPM Civil Contracting ahead of schedule. Mayor Megan Knight says the splash pad reflects the city’s values of inclusivity and community connection.
