Fire crews in White Rock, B.C., contained a brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31) on a steep hillside near Marine Drive, west of Nichol Road. White Rock Fire Rescue and the B.C. Wildfire Service tackled the 0.9-hectare blaze with both ground crews and helicopters. Marine Drive was temporarily closed, but no homes were damaged and no evacuations were required. By 2 p.m., officials confirmed the fire was in the cleanup stage and later listed as under control. The cause remains under investigation.

RCMP say a shooting at a White Rock home on Pacific Avenue early Wednesday morning was linked to extortion. Neighbours reported hearing rapid gunfire around 3:20 a.m., and officers later found bullet holes in the garage door. No one was injured. Police believe the incident was targeted and are asking residents with dashcam or security footage from the area to come forward. The case is being investigated alongside other extortion-related shootings across the Lower Mainland.
Clara Ding, 14, from White Rock, has been named to Team Canada for the World Junior Girls Golf Championship, Sept. 15–20 in St. Catharines, Ont. The rising star has two major wins this season and will compete against golfers from 23 countries.
The White Rock 13U AAA Tritons won the B.C. provincial championship and went on to compete at the Canadian Nationals in Ontario, finishing seventh. With a 30-6 season record and standout performances across the roster, the team showed resilience and depth. Coaches praised their grit and teamwork, calling the season a strong success and a promising step for the future.
White Rock’s new Generations Playground Splash Pad officially opened at Centennial Park on August 21, drawing families, city officials, and community partners. More than 60 people attended, including Mayor Megan Knight and representatives from the White Rock Firefighters Charity Association and Peace Arch Hospital Foundation, both key donors. Children from White Rock Summer Camp helped mark the occasion by testing the splash pad, while Fire Chief Brad Davie joined in the fun under the soaker bucket. The project, built ahead of schedule by GPM Civil Contracting, was celebrated as a community-driven success.
