KPU researcher leads Surrey study on food security
Dr. Cayley Velazquez, a Health Science instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), has been named a Canada Research Chair and awarded $600,000 in federal funding over five years to study food security among Surrey’s Black, African and Caribbean communities. Her research will explore cultural, social, economic and environmental factors affecting food access and will partner with Seeds of Change Surrey to develop equitable, community-informed food programs and policies. Surrey, home to B.C.’s largest self-identifying Black population, faces ongoing challenges in food accessibility and cultural inclusion.
