Appeal Court Sends Surrey Fentanyl Dealer to Prison
The B.C. Court of Appeal has overturned a Surrey judge’s decision to grant house arrest to fentanyl dealer Kyle Robert Bird, 37, and replaced it with a five-year federal prison sentence. The court ruled the original sentence was “manifestly disproportionate” given the scale of drugs involved, including 834 fentanyl pills and nearly 8.7 kilograms of MDMA. Crown prosecutors, who had sought a harsher penalty, argued the conditional sentence was unfit amid B.C.’s ongoing toxic drug crisis.
