Police have not confirmed any arrests or whether the search is connected to recent extortion-related incidents in Surrey and Metro Vancouver.
The Newton Business Improvement Association will host two major community events in Surrey this fall. The State of Newton lunch takes place on October 2 at Bombay Banquet Hall, featuring TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn as keynote speaker on transportation and transit. Later, on October 25, the BIA partners with Envision Financial for the 8th annual Spooktacular Newton, a free family festival on 137 Street with trick-or-treating, games, food trucks, performances, and pumpkin donations supporting the Surrey Food Bank.
Surrey is set to enhance community spaces in Newton with semi-enclosed heated shelters planned for Chimney Heights and T.E. Scott parks, providing residents with year-round gathering spots. At the same time, city hall is developing a new 1.6-hectare park in South Newton at 58A Avenue and 142 Street, featuring a multi-sport court, playground, and a pilot leash-optional dog path. Both projects aim to improve accessibility, recreation, and community connection across Newton.
A new “Clean Team” has launched in Surrey’s Newton Town Centre through a partnership between the Newton Business Improvement Association (BIA) and Vancouver-based Mission Possible. The initiative employs individuals facing barriers such as homelessness, poverty, and mental illness, offering them training, part-time transitional jobs, and pathways toward permanent employment. The program, which began in July, replaces longtime local trash collector Kenneth Green and focuses on maintaining cleanliness for nearly 530 local businesses. Mission Possible, founded in 1992, currently supports over 120 people in its social enterprises and hopes to expand opportunities in Surrey, helping participants gain confidence, community pride, and long-term work prospects.
