Wildfire & Forestry Workers Join Expanding BCGEU Strike

All eligible members of the B.C. Wildfire Service and the provincial Forestry Ministry have joined the ongoing B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) strike, the union confirmed on Wednesday, Oct. 22. This escalation brings more than 25,000 public-sector employees across over 550 worksites into job action province-wide. Despite the strike, the Forestry Ministry says wildfire response remains unaffected, with essential services in place. Mediation between the BCGEU and the province began Oct. 18 under mediators Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers, as the labour dispute enters its eighth week.

BCGEU Strike Widens as Talks with Province Collapse

The BCGEU strike has expanded to 90 picket lines across B.C., with 900 more public service workers joining after wage talks with the province collapsed. Over 17,000 workers are now on strike, affecting government offices and liquor stores. The union seeks cost-of-living protections and higher wage increases, rejecting the government’s 2% annual offer as insufficient against inflation. With negotiations stalled since September 29, the BCGEU vows to escalate job action until a fair deal is reached.
