Surrey Organizations Celebrate Environmental Leadership
Surrey is celebrating sustainability as Surrey Libraries and local organizations earn top honors at the Environment & Business Awards. The 19th annual event, held at the Civic Hotel on September 19, recognized businesses and nonprofits that demonstrate exceptional dedication to environmental stewardship while inspiring their communities.
This year, Surrey Libraries, Storehouse Community Hub Society, and Superfluity Thrift Store received awards in the large, medium, and small business categories, highlighting innovative practices that reduce environmental impact and foster community engagement.
Surrey Libraries Leads in Sustainable Innovation
The Large Business award went to Surrey Libraries for becoming Canada’s first library network to pursue the Sustainable Libraries Certification Program. This initiative integrates sustainability into every aspect of operations, including a new Sustainability Policy, a Road Map, and a focus on LEED and Passive House standards for new branches.
Beyond infrastructure, Surrey Libraries engages the community with sustainability programs like bike repair stations and pollinator gardens. These initiatives reduce carbon footprints while promoting environmental awareness and leadership throughout Surrey.
Storehouse Community Hub Diverts Food Waste
The Medium Business award recognized Storehouse Community Hub Society for its food rescue program, which redirects nearly 1.2 million pounds of food annually. Partnering with grocery stores and suppliers, the organization collects surplus or short-dated items, redistributing edible food to those in need.
Remaining food waste is repurposed as compost or animal feed, demonstrating a circular model that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and landfill pressure while addressing food insecurity. Storehouse exemplifies how sustainability and community service can work hand in hand.
Superfluity Thrift Promotes Circular Economy
The Small Business award honored Superfluity Thrift Store, a fundraising initiative supporting Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock. The store diverts thousands of pounds of donated goods from landfills through sorting, upcycling, and partnerships with local recyclers.
By promoting reuse and community engagement, Superfluity minimizes waste, reduces demand for new products, and fosters a culture of sustainability, showcasing the power of small businesses in environmental leadership.
Celebrating Surrey’s Sustainable Future
The 2025 Environment & Business Awards highlight how organizations in Surrey are combining environmental stewardship with meaningful community impact. From libraries leading in sustainable design to food rescue programs and thrift stores championing circular economies, these winners demonstrate that caring for the planet and supporting the community go hand in hand.
