Surrey’s new Healing House adds 12 treatment beds for young women and non-binary youth facing substance-use challenges, offering safe care and hope.
A New Safe Space for Youth in Crisis
Young people in B.C. facing substance-use challenges now have access to a much-needed lifeline. A new facility in South Surrey, called The Healing House – q’ay’tl’et ew’xw, has officially opened its doors with 12 live-in treatment beds designed for females, female-identifying, and non-binary youth aged 17 to 24.
Why This Matters Now
B.C.’s Minister of Health, Josie Osborne, spoke at the launch, noting how today’s young people are under intense pressure. Academic demands, financial struggles, social media stress, the toxic drug crisis, and the aftermath of the pandemic all collide during the critical years when youth are still shaping their identity.
“It’s taking a serious toll,” Osborne said. “The Healing House will provide a safe, compassionate space where young people can find the care and support they need and deserve.”
What the Healing House Offers
The new program doesn’t just provide a bed—it offers a holistic approach. Youth can stay for up to 90 days, receiving:
- Individual and group therapy
- Therapeutic recreation
- Life-skills training
- Compassionate, trauma-informed care
The centre emphasizes autonomy, collaboration, and choice, ensuring each young person plays an active role in their recovery journey.
More Than Just Treatment—It’s Hope
Clients are already seeing the difference. One young resident, Gillian, described the Healing House as transformative.
“The staff here have surpassed my expectations,” she shared. “We’re learning how to grow in society, supported by people who truly care.”
Backed by Strong Partnerships
The Healing House is operated by Coast Mental Health in partnership with B.C. Children’s Hospital, which took over youth substance-use services in July 2023. Coast Mental Health began admitting clients in May 2025, expanding critical services across the province.
This facility follows the opening of another Surrey program in March 2023, which added 18 beds for male, male-identifying, and non-binary youth. Together, these initiatives mark a growing commitment to youth wellness.

Looking Ahead
Officials stress that these 12 new beds are more than physical spaces—they represent opportunity, dignity, and healing. With demand for mental health and addiction services continuing to rise, the Healing House stands as a beacon of hope for young people and their families across British Columbia.
