White Rock turned into a sea of red and white this past weekend as the local pickleball community gathered for the Canada Proud Pickleball Tournament. The event wasn’t just about competition—it was about celebrating national pride, showcasing sportsmanship, and giving back to a cause that resonates with Canadians nationwide.
Proceeds from the event went to the Terry Fox Foundation, adding even more meaning to every serve, rally, and match point.
A Sea of Red, White, and Smiles
Nearly 650 members strong, the White Rock Pickleball Association has become one of the most vibrant communities in the region. Many players dressed head-to-toe in patriotic colors, but it was Debbie Lawrance and Peter Hucul who stole the spotlight, being crowned Best Dressed “Canada Proud” Duo.
Event organizer John Bogar praised the dedication of volunteers who made the weekend possible. “From cleaning courts at dawn to setting up tents, handling registration, singing the anthem, and even providing first aid—our community spirit was on full display,” Bogar said.
Fun on the Courts, Fierce on the Scoreboard
While the tournament was billed as “just for fun,” the matches told another story. Rallies grew longer, smashes sharper, and the finals? Nothing short of electrifying. Spectators were treated to an impressive showcase of skill, with the younger teams taking over the spotlight.
Pickleball’s growing popularity in schools means that the sport isn’t just for retirees anymore—it’s fast becoming a multi-generational favorite.
Champions Crowned, But Rain Wins Sunday
In Saturday’s mixed doubles competition, Edmund Luk and Andrea Lee battled their way to become A-side champions. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans on Sunday, washing out the men’s and women’s matches.
Still, the tournament left a lasting mark, proving once again that pickleball is about more than the game—it’s about pride, community, and giving back.
