Search Ends in Tragic Discovery
The search for a missing Surrey senior has ended in heartbreak. Surrey Police confirmed that William (Bill) Haworth, 76, was found deceased on Monday night, Sept. 8. His family announced the news the next morning, expressing both grief and gratitude for the overwhelming support during the week-long search.
Family Expresses Deep Gratitude
In a statement released Tuesday, Haworth’s family thanked volunteers and neighbours who joined the effort. “Seeing the community step up to help find Bill meant the world to us. We cannot thank you enough for your support, kindness, and determination,” the family said, requesting privacy at this time.
A community-led Facebook group, created to coordinate search efforts, also acknowledged the public’s compassion. “The love and dedication of people in our community to step up for each other is amazing,” one post read.
Timeline of the Search
Haworth, a longtime Surrey teacher and rugby coach, went missing on Aug. 27 from his Fraser Heights neighbourhood. Despite living with dementia, he had never strayed from his usual walking loop before.
Surveillance footage later showed him walking southbound on the 160 Street overpass above Highway 1 shortly after 12:30 p.m. that day. A possible sighting was reported near a Surrey Tim Hortons two days later, though it was never confirmed.
Family and friends scoured the area daily, following every lead — from camera checks to tips involving buses, vehicles, and even psychic suggestions. “Everything we’re doing is a long shot,” his daughter Kristina Morrison said during the search, adding that each unconfirmed lead brought fresh disappointment.
Community Support Praised
Despite the outcome, Morrison and her family expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone who assisted. “I’m so grateful, because we could never have done as much without everyone’s help,” she said.
The Surrey Police Service also extended appreciation to the public for their determination to help bring answers.
Remembering William Haworth
Haworth is remembered as a respected educator and coach who left an impact on countless students and athletes in Surrey. He was last seen wearing a white baseball cap, blue shirt, black shorts, and white sneakers. At the time of his disappearance, police urged the public to stay with him and call authorities if he was located, as he might appear disoriented.
