Langford in Talks to Host BC Lions Pre-Season Game

Langford is negotiating to host BC Lions pre-season games in 2026 as BC Place readies for World Cup upgrades. Strong local support makes Starlight Stadium a top option, with final plans pending.

Returning to Greater Victoria

Langford is actively negotiating to host the BC Lions for part of the 2026 pre-season, with acting Mayor Colby Harder confirming discussions with the Canadian Football League club. “Conversations are ongoing with the BC Lions regarding the potential to have another game come back to Langford,” Harder said, noting the city’s eagerness to welcome the team.

Timing Amid World Cup Displacement

The BC Lions will temporarily relocate during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when Vancouver hosts seven matches between June 13 and July 7. Field installations and stadium upgrades at BC Place are expected to disrupt both pre-season and regular-season schedules, creating a need for alternate venues.

Past Success Sparks Momentum

Langford previously hosted its first CFL pre-season game in May, when the Lions faced the Calgary Stampeders. Tickets sold out in just 12 minutes, turning Starlight Stadium into a hub of excitement. The city’s successful hosting history, combined with Vancouver Island’s growing reputation as a football stop, strengthens the case for a return.

Community Impact and Local Enthusiasm

Mayor Harder highlighted the excitement from local fans. “Families were excited to go because the cost of the ferry and hotel in Vancouver is often prohibitive. It was also really cool to hear longtime fans show pride in having the game come to their hometown,” she said. The event drew attention from both casual supporters and longtime CFL enthusiasts.

Potential Alternatives and Venue Options

With BC Place unavailable, other potential venues have been discussed, including Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, Kelowna’s Apple Bowl, and UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium. Despite these options, Langford and Starlight Stadium remain top contenders due to prior successful events and its reputation as a multi-sport venue.

Next Steps and Official Timeline

Mayor Harder emphasized that talks are ongoing with no firm commitments. “We’re ambitious. We’re hoping for as many games as they’re willing to play in Langford, but we don’t have any firm commitments right now,” she said. BC Lions communications manager Matt Baker added that updates on concrete plans are expected by the end of the month.
