Local actors take centre stage

Two Surrey-based performers, Hana Shiels and Kelly Thompson, are among the cast of Home, I’m Darling, making its British Columbia debut at Langley’s Theatre in the Country (TIC) from September 11 to 27.

A story of nostalgia and perfection

Written by acclaimed English playwright Laura Wade, the Olivier Award-winning play is set in the 1950s and follows Judy, a woman who leaves her career to devote herself to creating the “perfect” home life. As the pressure mounts, comedic cracks in her carefully constructed world begin to surface.

Western Canada’s first staging

This late-summer production marks the first staging of Home, I’m Darling in Western Canada. TIC’s artistic director, Reg Parks, describes the play as “as funny as it is stylish,” highlighting its sharp humor and vintage flair. Costumes designed by Shelley Boe immerse audiences in the nostalgic aesthetic of mid-century living.

A diverse cast and direction

Alongside Shiels (Judy) and Thompson (Sylvia), the cast includes J.D. Dueckman as Johnny, Thomas Gage as Marcus, Genevieve Dougan as Alex, and Amber McMunn as Fran. The production is co-directed by Thomas Smith and Gabe Kirkley, bringing together a creative team that blends comedy with period authenticity.

Bringing audiences to the table

TIC, known for its dinner-theatre format, offers both dinner-and-show and show-only tickets, available at theatreinthecountry.com. Upcoming productions include a Murder Game Night in October, Billy Bishop Goes to War in November, and the holiday musical It’s A Wonderful Life, with more scheduled into 2026.
