Jason Cairney Becomes Surrey’s Youngest Fire Chief at 48
Surrey has a new leader at the helm of its fire service. At 48, Jason Cairney has officially become the city’s youngest fire chief, stepping into the role on September 2, one day after former chief Larry Thomas retired following a 36-year career.
Leading a Growing Force
Cairney now oversees 428 firefighters across 15 stations, along with 490 employees in total. His appointment comes at a critical moment as Surrey rapidly expands into what will soon be B.C.’s largest city. Having served more than 23 years in Surrey, Cairney’s last role was deputy fire chief, where he guided fire prevention and information technology. Just days before becoming chief, he welcomed 13 new recruits at their graduation ceremony.
A Career Shaped by Service
Born in Ontario, Cairney moved to Surrey in 1999 and joined the fire service shortly after. His path to firefighting was not straightforward—he tried different jobs before realizing his passion for rescue and public safety. “I was always committed to the city of Surrey, really proud of the job, and did my best all the way through,” he reflected.
Preparing for Surrey’s Future
Cairney has witnessed immense transformation in Surrey, particularly the surge of highrises. But he says the department is well prepared. “We’ve had highrises for a long time, just not as many. We’re well equipped with the training and equipment we need,” he explained.
As chief, he is focused on adapting to the city’s growth and harnessing technology to enhance services. “I’m excited about the opportunities ahead. Surrey is growing rapidly, and technology gives us new ways to strengthen our fire service,” he said.
A First Day of Leadership
Cairney’s first day was spent settling into his new role and connecting with teams. “It was about getting into the new space, having discussions, and figuring out what needs to be done,” he shared. His focus now is charting the path forward for Surrey Fire Service as it faces the challenges of a booming city.
