Surrey Police Sergeant Named Among World’s Top 40 Under 40

A proud moment for Surrey Police and the community, Sgt. Ryan Buhrig has been named one of the world’s top young officers. He received the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) 40 Under 40 Award, a global recognition for innovation, leadership, and commitment to advancing policing.

Global Recognition for Local Leadership

This prestigious award highlights 40 law enforcement professionals under the age of 40 who display excellence, vision, and dedication. For Buhrig, curiosity and compassion drive his work. “I’m motivated to improve policing through research, innovation, and meaningful community connections,” he shared.

Transforming Training and Policing Practices

Within the Surrey Police Service (SPS), Buhrig has played a vital role in professional development. He reshaped training through a new learning management system and an automated platform that streamlined how officers build critical skills. His leadership has also influenced organizational culture. During the police transition, he helped negotiate SPS’s first collective agreement, which included progressive policies like paid parental leave and expanded wellness programs.

A Career Rooted in Service and Education

Buhrig’s career began with the RCMP before he served at Port Moody Police Department and later joined SPS. Beyond frontline service, he shares his expertise as a seasonal instructor at the University of the Fraser Valley, focusing on trauma-informed and de-escalation practices. Academically accomplished, he holds a master’s degree in criminology, a Governor General’s Gold Medal, and is pursuing his PhD at Simon Fraser University.

Surrey’s Ongoing Legacy of Excellence

This recognition builds on a growing tradition of excellence within Surrey’s policing community. In previous years, SPS officers Det. Const. Mandy Glassco (2022) and Sgt. Kaleigh Paddon (2023) were also honored with the award. In 2024, Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Derek Bonner earned the same recognition, showing that Surrey continues to produce leaders respected worldwide.

Looking Ahead

Buhrig’s recognition is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of Surrey Police Service’s vision for progressive and community-centered policing. His innovative spirit and dedication signal a bright future for law enforcement in Surrey and beyond.
