Clayton Heights Secondary to Double Student Capacity

The B.C. government is investing nearly $89 million to expand Clayton Heights Secondary in Surrey, doubling its capacity to 2,000 students. Premier David Eby announced the project on September 4, with Surrey Schools contributing $1.6 million. The expansion will add 41 classrooms, a gym, dance studio, labs, art spaces, and an Indigenous learning area. Officials say the project addresses Surrey’s rapid growth, though no construction timeline has been released.

Clayton Heights Secondary to Double Student Capacity

B.C. invests $89M to expand Clayton Heights Secondary in Surrey, adding 1,000 new spaces and modern facilities to meet rapid population growth.

Major Expansion Announced

The B.C. government has unveiled a $89 million plan to expand Clayton Heights Secondary in Surrey, effectively doubling its student capacity. Premier David Eby announced the project on September 4, confirming the addition of 1,000 new student spaces. Surrey Schools will contribute an additional $1.6 million to the expansion.

Addressing Surrey’s Growth

Officials emphasized that the investment responds to Surrey’s rapid population increase. “Surrey is one of the fastest-growing cities in the province and families here need more schools to keep up with that growth,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure, in a government release.

New Facilities Planned

The expansion will transform Clayton Heights into a 2,000-student school. Planned features include a new gymnasium, a dance studio, enhanced science and technology labs, upgraded art spaces, and an Indigenous learning and cultural connection area. The project will add 41 classrooms across a new four-storey wing.

Government’s Commitment

Parliamentary Secretary Garry Begg underscored the broader push for school infrastructure in Surrey. “With over 6,000 new seats for Surrey students underway, we’re ensuring that more students will have access to high-quality learning environments,” he said.

Broader Provincial Strategy

This announcement follows last week’s news of 3,000 new student seats being added across B.C., including 700 in Surrey. The investments are part of the province’s long-term plan to modernize schools and relieve overcrowding in fast-growing districts.

Project Timeline Unclear

While details of the design and scope have been released, the province has not yet announced when construction will begin or when the expansion will be completed.
