A fourth Community Café opens Sept. 3 in South Surrey – White Rock, helping residents connect, share, and strengthen mental wellness.
South Surrey Cafés Expand Mental Wellness Program
Grassroots Society Driving Growth
Together South Surrey White Rock Society (Together-SSWR), a volunteer-run non-profit, is expanding its Community Café program this fall. Founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has grown into a trusted hub for fostering resilience, connection, and mental wellness across the community.
New Location Opening After Labour Day
Starting September 3, a fourth Community Café will meet weekly at the Roadhouse Grille atrium on King George Boulevard. The Wednesday afternoon sessions join three existing cafés hosted at Laura’s Coffee Corner, the White Rock Community Centre, and the White Rock Library.
A Safe Place to Talk and Connect
The cafés are free and drop-in, with no registration required. Each 90-minute session is facilitated by a mental health professional who encourages open discussion on wellness topics. Respect, inclusivity, and confidentiality are emphasized, creating a safe environment where participants feel heard and supported.
Impact on Social Isolation
While not a form of therapy, the gatherings are designed to reduce isolation and build meaningful relationships. Many participants describe arriving uncertain but leaving with a strong sense of community, laughter, and belonging. For newcomers to the region, the cafés often provide a first step toward connection.
Topics Focused on Growth and Well-Being
Upcoming sessions will explore themes such as Uncovering Purpose and Meaning, Self-Compassion, Deep Listening, Effective Communication, and Navigating Life Transitions. All topics reflect the society’s focus on positive psychology and practical mental wellness strategies.
Community Partnerships and Support
The cafés are made possible by volunteers, local businesses, and organizations such as Alexandra Neighbourhood House, Sources, and the White Rock South Surrey Practice of Family Physicians. The Peace Arch Hospital Foundation provides additional funding support through its commitment to community wellness.
Beyond the Cafés
Together-SSWR also reaches residents at local events like the White Rock Farmers Market, where it shares resources and invites participation in its Kindness Exchange Board. Handwritten notes of encouragement from the initiative are collected in the Community Kindness Book, a publication that highlights caring words from across the region.
