Hydrogen Truck Debuts in Prince Rupert with 2025 Model

World’s first 2025 hydrogen truck launched in Prince Rupert

The city of Prince Rupert has marked a major step toward clean transportation with the debut of a groundbreaking hydrogen truck. The 2025 Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell model is now operating between Prince Rupert and Terrace, making this the first deployment of its kind worldwide.

Pilot project brings global first to northern B.C.

The launch is part of the Heavy Duty Zero Emissions Vehicle Pilot Project, a collaboration with Innovate BC’s Integrated Marketplace. Earlier this month, Hyundai Motor Group hosted training sessions with Prince Rupert Fire Rescue and the Port Authority, giving first responders and logistics staff hands-on experience with the new vehicle.

Advanced technology boosts performance and safety

The upgraded XCIENT truck features a hydrogen fuel cell system tested across North America. With 10 tanks holding 68 kilograms of hydrogen, it delivers a driving range of more than 720 kilometres under optimal conditions. The truck supports heavy loads with a gross combination weight of up to 82,000 pounds. In addition, it includes Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems and improved interiors to enhance safety and comfort for drivers.

Local hydrogen strategy supports clean energy goals

Prince Rupert is backing hydrogen innovation with a refuelling station planned for Kaien Road under a Temporary Use Permit. The project, supported by Innovate BC, aligns with the city’s Community Energy & Emissions Plan. City planner Rodolfo Paras emphasized that hydrogen represents a key pathway for Canada to lower greenhouse gas emissions. By supporting this development, the city is advancing regional sustainability efforts and preparing for broader adoption of hydrogen fuel.

Growing role in Canada’s clean transport shift

Globally, the Hyundai XCIENT has already logged over 13 million kilometres since its 2020 launch in Switzerland. Now, with the 2025 model arriving in northern B.C., Canada is demonstrating its readiness to lead in zero-emission freight transportation.

Stay tuned to Surreyspeak for updates on clean energy breakthroughs shaping communities.
