Heated Shelters Coming to Newton Parks
Residents of Surrey’s Newton community will soon see the addition of semi-enclosed heated shelters at Chimney Heights Park and T.E. Scott Park. The City of Surrey confirmed the projects this week, with signage already posted at Chimney Heights displaying early designs.
City’s Motivation for the Project
Mayor Brenda Locke highlighted the upgrades on social media, noting that residents expressed the need for year-round gathering spaces during community consultations under the Focus Newton initiative. “Improvements like this may seem small, but they make a real difference in daily life — helping residents stay connected in every season,” she said.
Community Impact and Accessibility
The shelters are designed to provide warm, accessible public spaces where families, seniors, and community groups can gather regardless of the weather. While the city website lists the projects, details such as budget and completion timelines have not yet been disclosed.
New South Newton Park in Development
Alongside the shelters, Surrey is advancing plans for a 1.6-hectare (3.9-acre) park at 58A Avenue and 142 Street in South Newton. The park will include areas under a hydro right-of-way and is expected to move into detailed design and construction planning this fall.
Features of the Upcoming Green Space
Planned amenities include a multi-sport court equipped for basketball, hockey, and soccer, as well as a playground designed for families. Notably, the park will also pilot a leash-optional dog path, separated by 58A Avenue and fenced for safety, offering residents a chance to provide feedback on this new recreational feature.
City’s Vision for the Future
According to city hall, the park aims to create a space “where people of all ages and abilities can play, explore, and connect,” with accessible pathways linking it to nearby neighbourhoods. Public input is currently being gathered through an online survey, ensuring the park reflects community needs.
