B.C. Author Draws Inspiration From the East Coast

What started as a simple family trip turned into the spark for a brand-new story. Coldstream author Kristin Kraus has announced the launch of her latest novella, They Didn’t See The Flowers, set in modern-day Halifax and layered with themes of crime and social justice.

Kraus will be celebrating the official launch on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Vernon and District Métis Association from 1–3 p.m., where readers can connect with her work firsthand.

A Vacation That Planted the Seed

Back in 2013, Kraus, along with her husband and daughter, toured the Maritimes while exploring potential universities. They wandered through Halifax landmarks such as the Citadel, Alexander Keith’s Brewery, the Historic Properties, and even the Africville Museum.

That trip left more than just photos and memories. It laid the groundwork for her gripping story, one that blends an assault, a murder, and a fight for justice into a powerful narrative rooted in Halifax’s culture and history.

While the novella is filled with suspense, Kraus also highlights deeper issues. Her storytelling shines a light on social justice, giving readers more than a crime to solve—it offers them questions to ponder long after the last page.
