Veteran MLA with Deep Roots in Port Coquitlam

Mike Farnworth, the longtime Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Port Coquitlam, has been a fixture in B.C. politics since first being elected in 1991. Over multiple terms, he has become one of the province’s most experienced and respected lawmakers.

Career Spanning More Than Three Decades

Farnworth represented Port Coquitlam from 1991 to 2001, returned in 2005, and has continued to serve ever since. His enduring political career reflects both voter confidence and his ability to adapt to shifting provincial priorities.

Leadership Roles in Provincial Government

Currently serving as B.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Transit and as Government House Leader, Farnworth has held a wide range of portfolios. His past roles include Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Minister of Health, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and Minister of Social Development and Economic Security.

Early Life and Education

Raised in Port Coquitlam, Farnworth has lived in the community for more than 50 years. He studied geography at Simon Fraser University before entering local politics. His political journey began with three terms on Port Coquitlam city council in 1983, 1985, and 1990.

International Work in Democratic Development

Between 2001 and 2004, Farnworth worked abroad in Bulgaria, the Balkans, and Iraq, assisting with democratic governance programs. His efforts focused on strengthening multiparty democracies in nations transitioning from one-party systems.

Commitment to Public Service

After returning to the Legislature, Farnworth served as the Official Opposition’s spokesperson for justice and public safety, as well as Opposition House Leader. His decades of service reflect a commitment to both his constituents in Port Coquitlam and the broader governance of British Columbia.
