Late-Night Stop Leads to Weapons, Drug Seizure

A routine traffic stop in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood on Tuesday night, August 5, led to the discovery of a loaded handgun, illegal drugs, and other prohibited items, Surrey Police Service confirmed Wednesday.

Vehicle Pulled Over in Newton

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of 64 Avenue and 126 Street. Officers from the Surrey Police Gang Crime Unit stopped a vehicle during a targeted enforcement patrol in the area.

Suspicious Items Observed Inside

According to police, officers initially noticed cannabis products inside the vehicle. This observation prompted a further search of the car under the applicable laws governing cannabis possession and transportation.

Seized Items Include Firearm and Baton

During the search, officers located a baton and a loaded handgun. The vehicle’s driver, who was the only occupant, was arrested on the spot. The gun will be sent for forensic testing to determine if it is linked to any prior crimes.

Driver Released Pending Investigation

While the firearm, cannabis, baton, and vehicle were all seized by police, the driver has since been released pending further investigation. The individual’s name has not been publicly disclosed.

Ongoing Efforts to Deter Gang Activity

Police say the stop and seizure are part of continued efforts by the Gang Crime Unit to disrupt gang-related violence and illegal firearms in Surrey. Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
