Vancouver-Yaletown MLA Terry Yung drives community safety and integration as BC’s Minister of State. Here’s how his experience shapes his mission

Elected Voice in the Heart of Vancouver

Terry Yung was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Vancouver-Yaletown in 2024, marking a pivotal shift in the region’s political leadership. A lifelong advocate for public safety and social cohesion, Yung now serves as the Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services in British Columbia. His appointment brings a community-focused lens to some of the province’s most pressing safety and inclusion challenges.

From Police Command to Provincial Cabinet

Before entering politics, Yung built a respected career with the Vancouver Police Department, where he held senior positions in Diversity, Community & Indigenous Relations, Operations, and Administration. His work extended beyond city boundaries, contributing to national and provincial advisory committees on hate crime prevention and equity in law enforcement. This on-the-ground experience is now informing policy decisions at the highest level.

A Track Record of Service and Advocacy

Yung’s commitment to service didn’t begin at the precinct or legislature. A recognized community leader, he’s long championed youth empowerment, multicultural engagement, and support for marginalized groups. He has held board positions with Covenant House Vancouver, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Classical Chinese Garden, and the Justice Institute of BC. Notably, he served as the longest-standing Board Chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., one of Canada’s largest social service agencies serving immigrants and newcomers.

Building Safe, Inclusive Futures for BC

Now in office, Yung’s mandate focuses on strengthening public safety, improving community integration, and expanding access to support services across BC. His approach merges operational insight with grassroots understanding, aiming to reduce crime, address systemic barriers, and create culturally responsive programs. His tenure is also marked by efforts to rebuild trust between communities and institutions through transparency and representation.

A Life Anchored in Education and Community

Yung brings academic rigor to his role, holding a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California and a Master of Arts from Royal Roads University. These credentials, paired with decades of lived experience, position him as a unique bridge between policy and people. He lives in Vancouver with his wife, Sarah, continuing to stay closely connected to the community he serves.

What’s Next for Yung’s Portfolio?

As Minister of State, Yung is expected to introduce new strategies in community safety later this year, focusing on youth outreach, anti-hate initiatives, and integrated services for vulnerable populations. With BC at a crossroads for public safety reform, all eyes are on Yung’s leadership to deliver long-term, inclusive solutions.
