A Colorful Homecoming of Art, Culture, and Community

Ever wondered what two decades of artistic expression look like through the lens of culture? This summer and fall, Surrey Art Gallery invites you on a vibrant visual journey into the heart of South Asian creativity — and the best part? Admission is totally free.

Running until November 2, “20 Years of South Asian Arts: A Photographic Journey” marks not one but two exciting anniversaries: 20 years of the South Asian Arts Society and 10 years of the Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts. It’s a double celebration that promises rhythm, color, and cultural pride.

A Tapestry of Tradition in Motion

Step into the Community Rails Space at the gallery in Newton and you’ll be greeted by photographs that do more than decorate the walls — they tell stories. Expect to see the contagious energy of a Bhangra dance mid-jump, the soulful stillness of a Qawwali concert, and even the infectious laughter of a packed comedy show.

Every image captures a heartbeat of South Asian diasporic life — from joyful performances to the subtle details that tie tradition to modernity. Think dhol drums, ghunghroos, and rich fabrics that speak louder than words.

“It Feels Like Coming Home

For Gurpreet Sian, Executive Director of South Asian Arts Society, this exhibit is deeply personal. “I’m thrilled to share these unforgettable memories with the Surrey community — where our journey began,” he said. “It feels like a true homecoming.”

And it really is. Founded in 2005, the Society has grown into a cultural cornerstone, continuously evolving through collaborative performances and programs. It’s not just about preserving culture — it’s about pushing it forward.

Why You Should Go

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of South Asian performing arts or just curious to explore something new, this exhibit has something to move you — literally and emotionally.

  • Where? Surrey Art Gallery, Newton
  • When? Now through November 2, 2025
  • How much? Completely free

So, why not take a moment to experience the stories, colors, and sounds of a community that’s shaped Surrey’s cultural landscape for the last 20 years?
