Delta Police ranks first in MADD Metro Vancouver’s impaired driving enforcement awards. Surrey, Port Moody, and others follow in the 2024 Top 5 list.
Delta Recognized for Strong DUI Enforcement Efforts
The Delta Police Department has been named the top jurisdiction for impaired driving enforcement in Metro Vancouver, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Metro Vancouver.
In its third Top 5 Impaired Driving Enforcement Awards, MADD highlighted the Delta force’s exceptional efforts to combat impaired driving. The awards were announced this week and are based on data collected between July 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024.
How Rankings Were Determined
MADD Metro Vancouver’s rankings are based on enforcement data, including criminal charges and administrative roadside actions. These figures were adjusted per capita to ensure fairness across different jurisdictions.
Delta recorded the highest enforcement rate, with one impaired driving intervention per 144 residents—amounting to 752 enforcements. Port Moody followed with 212 actions and a score of 92. Surrey came in third with a score of 44, while Coquitlam (38) and Langley (33) rounded out the top five.
Why Delta Topped the List
Delta’s top score reflects its aggressive approach to impaired driving enforcement. By prioritizing initiatives like Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS), which allows officers to request breath samples at any lawful stop, Delta Police have significantly increased detection rates.
“This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about leadership and commitment to public safety,” said Kristine Li, MADD Metro Vancouver’s secretary and board member. “These jurisdictions are doing the work the public expects, and we want to celebrate that.”
Where Other Jurisdictions Stand
Surrey, one of the region’s largest municipalities, earned third place with 44 enforcement points, down from its position in 2023 when West Vancouver and New Westminster took the top spots. Notably, those two cities did not make this year’s list.
This year’s results align closely with 2021 outcomes, suggesting consistent trends in enforcement among top-performing departments.
What Comes Next
In the coming weeks, MADD Metro Vancouver plans to personally visit each of the top five police departments to express gratitude and formally present the awards.
MADD also continues to advocate for broader adoption of MAS and other proactive enforcement tools. The organization emphasizes that enforcement is key to deterrence, behaviour change, and reducing impaired driving incidents.
