Surrey’s Backyard Golf Opens: Fun Greens for All

Surrey’s Backyard Golf blends casual fun with short-game practice. New facility near Clayton Par 3 welcomes golfers of all levels.

Surrey’s Backyard Golf Opens: Fun Greens for All

Surrey’s New Backyard Golf: Where Everyone Can Swing

Surrey golf fans—and even those who’ve never picked up a club—have a new reason to head outdoors. A fresh short-game facility called Backyard Golf Company has officially opened next to the revamped Clayton Hills Par 3 course. Designed to feel more like a social hangout than a competitive golf course, this new destination combines serious practice with relaxed “backyard vibes” and is already drawing players from all across the Lower Mainland.

Spanning 20,000 square feet, the facility features artificial greens, realistic bunkers, and even a natural-sand trap for a more authentic feel. It’s strategically located just off Highway 10 and 188 Street, offering convenient access for locals and visitors alike. The nearby Clayton Public House and a licensed patio with lounge chairs, music, and food service only enhance its appeal.

Built for Golfers—And Non-Golfers Alike

“This place isn’t just for seasoned players,” said Steve Liddicoat, director of operations. “If you’re an experienced golfer, you’ll love dialing in your short game here. But if you’ve never touched a club, this is your chance to try putting and chipping without the pressure of a big course.”

That balance of serious practice and easygoing fun is exactly what co-founders Steve Liddicoat and Matt Palsenbarg set out to achieve. The two longtime friends—both rooted in Surrey’s golf scene—brought the concept to life in record time. Palsenbarg came up with the idea last November; by March, Liddicoat had joined the project, and construction began soon after.

“Since then, it’s been non-stop,” Liddicoat added. “We wanted to make a space that’s inclusive, social, and truly enjoyable.”

More Than Just a Practice Ground

The Backyard is also becoming a hit for casual hangouts and group events. Corporate bookings, private parties, and drop-ins are already filling the calendar. Whether you want to sharpen your skills, sip something on the patio, or just try something new, this space encourages people to get involved—without intimidation.

“We’ve had people come just to watch and end up grabbing a putter because it looked fun,” Liddicoat said. “That’s the energy we wanted—a place where everyone feels like, ‘Hey, I could do that.’”
