Black community members invited to share legal experiences at Surrey event shaping B.C.’s first Black-focused legal clinic.
Community Voices to Shape Legal Reform
The Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) is launching a province-wide initiative to establish British Columbia’s first Black-focused legal clinic. As part of this effort, CABL is hosting community consultation events in Vancouver and Surrey to hear firsthand from Black residents about their experiences with the legal system.
Dates and Location Confirmed
Three public meetings will be held in early August: two in Vancouver on August 5 and 6, and one in Surrey on August 7. The Surrey event will take place at the Royal Event Community Center (13551 105A Avenue) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Organizers are encouraging attendance from Black community members, legal workers, and advocates.
Focus on Experience and Solutions
The consultations aim to uncover the barriers Black British Columbians face when accessing legal services, as well as gather input on what changes are most urgently needed. Participants will be invited to share what has worked, what hasn’t, and how future legal services can be made more inclusive and effective.
Inclusive Approach to Participation
The BC Community Alliance (BCCA), a key partner in the initiative, stated the sessions are open to “anyone who identifies as Black or whose ancestry originates from the Black racial groups of Africa.” Legal professionals and frontline staff who support Black clients are also encouraged to attend.
Supportive and Accessible Events
The events will offer ASL interpretation and transportation assistance to remove barriers to participation. Light refreshments will also be served to create a welcoming environment for all attendees.
