Pattullo Bridge Design Debate Reignites Political Rift

B.C. Conservative MLA Harman Bhangu has reignited debate over the Pattullo Bridge replacement, criticizing its four-lane design as a missed opportunity during a June 26 podcast. Bhangu argued the bridge should have been built with six lanes to accommodate future growth and improve traffic flow, particularly for trucks. Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth dismissed the criticism, defending the bridge as a modern, safe, and regionally supported solution. The bridge, set to open this fall, has long divided stakeholders in Surrey and New Westminster over its size and design.

Pattullo Bridge Design Debate Reignites Political Rift

BC MLA Harman Bhangu questions Pattullo Bridge’s four-lane design, while Minister Farnworth defends the NDP’s approach amid growing regional demands.

Conservative MLA Criticizes Pattullo Bridge Design

The ongoing debate around British Columbia’s Pattullo Bridge resurfaced after BC Conservative transportation critic Harman Bhangu criticized its four-lane replacement design during a recent podcast appearance. Speaking on Coastal Front on June 26, 2025, the Langley-Abbotsford MLA called the bridge plan a “missed opportunity,” arguing that a six-lane structure would better serve the region’s growing infrastructure needs.

Design Decisions Spark Broader Concerns

Bhangu stated that inexperienced truckers often occupy two lanes on the current bridge, highlighting the need for more space and better connectivity. He criticized the lack of direct access to New Westminster’s Columbia Street and pointed to the Golden Ears Bridge as an example of better traffic planning. “That was actually a great design,” he said, suggesting the new Pattullo design falls short in comparison.

Regional Tensions over Lane Capacity

The discussion over whether the replacement bridge should have four or six lanes has long divided local stakeholders. New Westminster residents have pushed against expanding to six lanes due to limited space in residential areas. Meanwhile, Surrey leaders, including Mayor Brenda Locke, have labeled the four-lane plan “absurd” and insufficient for regional demand.

Government Stands Firm on Current Plan

Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth dismissed Bhangu’s criticism as “insane,” defending the bridge as a “state-of-the-art” project. He emphasized that expanding to six lanes would require major work in New Westminster, which could severely disrupt local traffic. “This is what was requested by Metro Vancouver,” he said, asserting the bridge meets regional transportation needs.

Project Scope and Safety Addressed

A Ministry of Transportation spokesperson confirmed the new bridge will be over twice the width of the current one, at 29 metres. Each lane is 3.6 metres wide, with two multi-use paths and space for safety barriers. Farnworth said the design ensures safer travel, particularly for large vehicles that currently struggle on the narrow existing span.

Economic and Strategic Considerations Raised

Bhangu argued the project lacks long-term foresight and questioned the provincial government’s budgeting across multiple transportation projects. “You’ve got to take a business sense to it,” he said, expressing concern over unfinished infrastructure spreading resources thin. Farnworth countered by stating that more—not fewer—projects are needed to meet demand in the Lower Mainland.

Broader Infrastructure Priorities Ahead

While the Pattullo Bridge remains a focal point, Bhangu reiterated that the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel is the province’s top transportation priority. He suggested many private companies were willing to assist with land and exits for the bridge project, had the province pursued a more flexible, growth-oriented design from the outset.

Bridge Remains On Schedule

Despite the renewed criticism, the NDP government confirmed that the four-lane Pattullo Bridge replacement remains on track to open this fall. The political disagreement highlights ongoing challenges in balancing urban planning, traffic safety, and long-term infrastructure vision in B.C.’s rapidly growing communities.
