Cloverdale is getting a new school, and it’s more than just another building—it’s a bold step toward enriching community life. At its July 14 council meeting, the City of Surrey approved third reading of a development proposal from the Fraser Valley Elementary School Society. This move clears the way for Crescent Heights Academy (CHA) to consolidate its split campuses into one modern K-12 facility on Highway 10.

Currently, CHA operates across three locations in the Cloverdale and Clayton areas. But that will change soon. The proposed site—at 18620 Highway 10 and 18641 54A Avenue—will become a centralized hub for all grades.

During the council’s public hearing, CHA’s head of school, Laurel Middelaer, emphasized how the academy is already contributing to Surrey in meaningful ways. She also explained how this new facility will further elevate the area.

“This space will bring people together and spark inspiration,” Middelaer said. Designed as more than a school, the facility will include gymnasiums, an outdoor turf field, atriums, and outdoor patios—all suitable for events beyond school hours.

Community feedback poured in, with 20 written submissions backing the project and only one raising concerns. Two issues stood out during the hearing: stormwater drainage and the sale of a city park parcel included in the plan.

On the drainage front, residents asked whether new storm sewers would be installed and how water issues—currently managed by tree cover—would be handled. City staff assured that infrastructure upgrades are part of the planning.

Regarding the parkland sale, officials clarified that proceeds would go into a dedicated fund. This fund is strictly earmarked to purchase new greenspace to compensate for any lost parkland.

The new school in Cloverdale is expected to open by fall of 2027, promising not just educational growth but a shared space that reflects thoughtful urban development and community collaboration.
