Liberal Democrats Dominate Woking By-Elections

The Liberal Democrats have retained both the Woking South seat on Surrey County Council and the Hoe Valley seat on Woking Borough Council in by-elections held on July 10. These elections were triggered by MP Will Forster stepping down from his local positions. Louise Morales and Deborah Hughes secured decisive wins for the party, while Reform UK emerged as the runner-up in both races, overtaking the Conservatives. The results reflect shifting political dynamics in Woking, with the Liberal Democrats solidifying their position and Reform UK gaining traction as a key challenger.

Liberal Democrats Dominate Woking By-Elections

The Liberal Democrats secured both county and borough seats in the Woking by-elections, continuing their stronghold as Reform UK overtakes the Conservatives.

By-Elections Held Following MP’s Resignation from Local Roles

The Liberal Democrats have retained control in both the Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council following two key by-elections held on July 10. The votes were triggered by Liberal Democrat Will Forster stepping down from his local posts after being elected as MP, prompting contests in Woking South and Hoe Valley.

New Representation for Woking South

In the Woking South race for Surrey County Council, Cllr Louise Morales of the Liberal Democrats secured a decisive victory with 1,939 votes. Morales, who has lived in Woking for over 30 years, promised to advocate for all residents regardless of political affiliation. “I will do my best to make long-term plans for roads, infrastructure, and services that work for future generations,” she stated following her win.

Reform UK Outperforms Conservatives

Reform UK finished second in both contests, pushing the Conservative Party into third place. In the county council race, Reform’s Richard Barker earned 584 votes, ahead of Conservative Martin Benstead’s 291. The Green Party and Labour trailed with 134 and 91 votes, respectively.

Liberal Democrats Hold Hoe Valley Seat

In the concurrent Woking Borough Council by-election for Hoe Valley, Liberal Democrat Deborah Hughes won with 1,118 votes. Reform UK’s Sean Flude followed with 379, while the Conservatives (130), Greens (83), and Labour (69) all remained in low double digits. Hughes’ win further cements the Liberal Democrats’ presence in the borough.

Strong Local Ties Cited by Winning Candidates

Both Morales and Hughes emphasized their deep roots in Woking as key to their campaigns. Morales cited her local family connections and decades-long residency as a foundation for understanding community needs. She pledged to work across party lines to deliver results for all constituents.

What’s Next for Woking’s Political Landscape

The by-election results highlight a shifting political balance in the area, with Reform UK emerging as a stronger challenger while the Conservatives face declining support. The Liberal Democrats’ success suggests continued voter confidence as the party seeks to expand its influence across Surrey.
