Hastings claims gold in White Rock’s Henri Lorieau tournament, honouring legacy with fun, community, and high-level youth baseball action.

Community Spirit Shines at Henri Lorieau Tournament

The annual Henri Lorieau Baseball Tournament returned to White Rock the weekend before Canada Day, bringing together youth teams, families, and fans for a spirited celebration of sport and legacy. Hosted by the White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association (WRSSBA), the event honoured the memory of former president Henri Lorieau with vibrant traditions and top-tier baseball.

Centennial Park Becomes a Hub of Action

From June 28 to 30, Centennial Park in White Rock buzzed with excitement as teams from Hastings, Mt. Seymour, Langley, Coquitlam, Whalley, New Westminster, and two WRSSBA squads competed in the annual tournament. Set under sunny skies, the event blended serious gameplay with joyful elements like Hawaiian shirts, music, and fake moustaches — symbols of Lorieau’s lively spirit and legacy.

Remembering a Leader Through Sport

Henri Lorieau, who passed away in 2015, was a dedicated volunteer and past president of WRSSBA. Known for his passion for youth sports and infectious personality, he became the face of the tournament. In his honour, the event serves not just as a competition but as a fundraiser for the Little League Challenger Program and the BC Cancer Society.

Inclusive Baseball Takes Centre Stage

A signature moment of the weekend was the Challenger Game, where athletes with cognitive or physical disabilities took the field. Julie Lorieau, continuing her father’s tradition, threw a perfect ceremonial pitch to kick off the event. The game reminded everyone of baseball’s power to include and inspire, drawing enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

High-Stakes Matches Lead to Championship Clash

After a round-robin phase, the semi-finals saw Hastings edge past White Rock Tritons Teal, while Mt. Seymour overcame White Rock Tritons Black. The bronze medal went to Tritons Teal, who played with determination and grit. The final showdown between Hastings and Mt. Seymour lived up to expectations, with both teams battling down to the final inning.

Hastings Clinches Gold in Dramatic Finale

In what organizers called an “epic, nail-biting battle,” Hastings emerged victorious in the championship game, defending their title and taking home the gold. The team celebrated in true Lorieau style — with wide smiles and honorary moustaches.

A Legacy of Unity and Celebration

Event co-organizer John Hogg expressed gratitude to all players, families, and volunteers, noting that the tournament remains a pillar of community unity. “The annual tournament continues to honour Henri’s legacy in the best way possible — by bringing our community together,” Hogg said.
