Two suspects arrested in 2024 Surrey extortion case tied to arson and gunfire. Joint police task force continues investigation across B.C.
Arrests Made in Ongoing Surrey Extortion Investigation
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a series of extortion cases that rocked Surrey’s South Asian business community throughout 2024. The arrests were made on Thursday, June 3, as part of an ongoing investigation involving multiple police agencies across British Columbia.
Crimes Involved Violence and Intimidation
The suspects were taken into custody for alleged involvement in the careless discharge of a firearm and arson — both linked to extortion attempts in 2024. According to a statement released Thursday by B.C. RCMP, the acts were part of a broader pattern of criminal intimidation that included property damage and threats of violence.
Longstanding Pattern of Targeted Extortion
Since late 2023, law enforcement agencies across the Lower Mainland have tracked a wave of extortion targeting primarily South Asian business owners. Victims reported receiving threats demanding large sums of money, with several cases escalating into arson or firearm-related incidents when demands were not met.
Joint Force Operation Formed to Lead Investigation
To coordinate investigative efforts, the RCMP Lower Mainland District launched a Joint Force Operation (JFO) in January 2025. The JFO includes investigators from the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit, Abbotsford Police Department, RCMP Federal Policing – Pacific Region, BC RCMP Major Crime Section, and a civilian analyst from the Surrey Police Service.
Authorities Emphasize Coordinated Law Enforcement
“This investigation reflects a strong commitment to public safety through collaboration,” said Chief Superintendent Duncan Pound, Assistant District Commander, RCMP Lower Mainland District. “While we couldn’t share updates earlier for strategic reasons, the public should know this case has been a top priority.”
Pound emphasized the importance of using regional resources and intelligence-sharing to secure evidence and pursue criminal charges against those responsible.
Broader Collaboration Across Agencies and Borders
The JFO is also working with the RCMP National Coordination and Support Team and international policing partners to gather intelligence and strengthen legal action. This unified approach is considered critical in tracking suspects, protecting victims, and addressing ongoing threats to public safety.
Police Urge Public to Report Extortion Attempts
Law enforcement is urging anyone who receives an extortion threat not to comply. Victims are advised to preserve all related messages and contact local authorities immediately.
The investigation remains active, and further updates are expected as police continue to build their case against individuals involved in the extortion network.
