Surrey Road Widening Boosts Safety and Traffic Flow

Surrey’s 64 Avenue Widening Project Moves Ahead

Surrey road widening and traffic safety improvements are shifting into high gear with the launch of a $10 million upgrade to 64 Avenue. The project will expand the road to four lanes between 152 Street and 164 Street, while also adding a multi-use path for both pedestrians and cyclists.

This major infrastructure update is part of Surrey’s larger plan to manage growth, ease congestion, and support safer, more connected communities across the city.

A Safer, Smoother Drive for Everyone

The goal of this project is simple: make commuting faster, safer, and more efficient. By adding two new lanes, the city expects to ease long-standing traffic bottlenecks along this important stretch.

According to Mayor Brenda Locke, this project is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. “Over the next five years, Surrey is investing $446 million into roads and public transit,” she said. “This project is key to keeping people and goods moving in every part of the city.”

Connecting Communities from Delta to Langley

Surrey’s Director of Transportation, Rafael Villarreal, emphasized the strategic value of the 64 Avenue upgrade.

“This is the final missing link in creating a continuous four-lane east-west corridor between Scott Road and 196 Street,” he said.

Because the road serves as a designated truck route and a key arterial road, the widening will support everything from regional goods movement to local commutes. The addition of a multi-use path makes it safer and easier for cyclists and pedestrians to navigate the area as well.

A Bigger Vision for the Future

This widening project doesn’t just fix a traffic problem—it supports the city’s long-term growth. As Surrey continues to expand, smart infrastructure like this ensures that development keeps pace with demand.

The work is already underway, and the city expects everything to be completed by 2026. Once done, residents will experience faster travel times, fewer backups, and safer crossings—whether they’re driving, biking, or walking.
