Large Fire Erupts in Newton on Monday Afternoon

A major structure fire broke out at the intersection of 72nd Avenue and 144th Street in Surrey on Monday at 4:24 p.m., prompting a swift response from emergency services. Five units from the Surrey Fire Service were dispatched to battle the blaze, which produced a thick column of black smoke visible across the Lower Mainland.

Emergency Services Mobilize to Contain the Blaze

Crews were “thoroughly involved” in extinguishing the fire. The intensity of the flames required significant resources, and multiple fire units worked together to prevent the blaze from spreading further.

Smoke Visible Across the Region

The towering smoke plume was reported by residents as far away as Richmond and New Westminster. Numerous calls to 1130 NewsRadio described the dramatic scene as smoke billowed from the Newton area, drawing attention across Metro Vancouver.

Paramedics Treat and Transport Injured Resident

BC Emergency Health Services confirmed receiving the emergency call at 4:24 p.m. Three ambulances responded, with paramedics providing on-site care. One patient was transported to hospital in stable condition following the incident.

Families Displaced and Traffic Impacted

Between five and eight families are expected to be displaced due to the fire. The incident also caused significant traffic delays, particularly near 144th Street and 72nd Avenue, as emergency crews worked at the scene and roads were partially blocked.

Investigation Into Cause Underway

The Surrey Fire Service reported that the cause of the fire remains undetermined. Officials are expected to conduct a thorough investigation once the site is secured. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
