Introduction

Tako van Popta brings a legal acumen and a steadfast commitment to public service to the House of Commons, where he represents the federal riding of Langley Township—Fraser Heights. A two-term Member of Parliament with the Conservative Party, van Popta currently serves as the Shadow Minister for Pacific Economic Development. His work in Parliament reflects a strong focus on economic growth, infrastructure, and grassroots collaboration across British Columbia.

Early Life and Legal Career

Born in Edmonton, Alberta on May 29, 1953, van Popta moved to British Columbia to pursue higher education. He earned his undergraduate degree from Trinity Western University, followed by a law degree from the University of British Columbia. He joined McQuarrie Hunter LLP, where he practiced for over three decades and eventually became Managing Partner. Under his leadership, the firm grew to become one of the largest law practices south of the Fraser River.

In addition to his legal career, van Popta has been deeply involved in community and economic development. He served on the Surrey Board of Trade, the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association, and the Langley Memorial Hospital Board. He also volunteered for over ten years with the Elim Housing Society, contributing to affordable housing and elder care services in the region.

Entry into Federal Politics

Van Popta entered federal politics following the retirement of Conservative MP Mark Warawa. Winning the nomination and subsequent 2019 election, he began his parliamentary journey during the 43rd Canadian Parliament. He was appointed to the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security and soon after, took on the roles of Chair of the B.C. Caucus and Deputy Shadow Minister for Employment.

His early contributions focused on justice, public safety, and employment—a reflection of both his legal expertise and economic insight.

Parliamentary Service and Party Leadership Support

Re-elected in 2021, van Popta continued to expand his influence in Parliament. During the 2022 Conservative Party leadership race, he endorsed Pierre Poilievre, who later appointed him as Shadow Minister for Pacific Economic Development. In this role, van Popta became a key voice in advocating for infrastructure investment, supply chain resilience, and economic partnerships that benefit British Columbia.

He has served on numerous House committees, including Justice and Human Rights, Procedure and House Affairs, and has been actively involved in Canada-Korea and Canada-Israel Inter-Parliamentary groups. These engagements highlight his focus on democratic institutions, foreign relations, and procedural integrity.

Current Role and Policy Focus

Now in the 45th Parliament, van Popta continues to serve as Shadow Minister for Pacific Economic Development. He works to ensure that the West Coast remains a competitive, innovative, and vital region in Canada’s economy—supporting sectors such as transportation, trade, film, and tourism. He is also a member of the influential Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs.

Locally, van Popta advocates for critical issues like flood mitigation, affordable housing, and transportation upgrades in Langley and surrounding communities. His policy positions emphasize balancing federal oversight with local needs and ensuring taxpayer value in government programs.

Personal Life

Tako van Popta and his wife Inga have lived in Langley for many years. They are proud parents to five children and grandparents to fifteen grandchildren. Outside Parliament, van Popta enjoys time with family and remains engaged with the community he represents.

Conclusion

Tako van Popta stands as a grounded and principled figure in Canadian federal politics. With decades of legal and leadership experience, he continues to advocate for West Coast communities through policy innovation, economic vision, and procedural integrity. As Langley Township—Fraser Heights evolves, van Popta remains a consistent and thoughtful voice in Ottawa, advancing priorities that reflect the values and aspirations of his constituents.
