A 13-hour RED FM Gurpurab Radiothon raised more than $500,000 for the Surrey Hospitals Foundation, supporting its campaign to bring robotic-assisted surgery to Surrey Memorial Hospital. The broadcast ran on 89.1 / 93.1 FM from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 5, with 100% of proceeds going toward the purchase of the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System.

Advancing Robotic Surgery in Surrey

“With the integration of the Da Vinci Surgical System, our team at Surrey Memorial Hospital will be empowered to maintain leadership in advanced minimally invasive thoracic and foregut surgery,” said Dr. Ahmad Ashrafi, regional division head and chief of thoracic surgery for Fraser Health.

Surrey Memorial performs more than 21,000 surgeries each year, 60% of which are cancer-related, making it Fraser Health’s busiest surgical site. The hospital will also become the first south of the Fraser and the fourth in B.C. to offer robotic-assisted surgery.

Community Support and Next Steps

The Foundation’s Robotics Campaign, launched earlier at the 2025 Celebration of Care Gala, has already raised $1.4 million in one night, with additional leadership support from the Ritchie Family.

“Thanks to the generosity of RED FM listeners, we are now even closer to our $5.5 million goal,” said Nicole Robson, president and CEO of the Surrey Hospitals Foundation.

The da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System represents the most advanced robotic technology available, designed to enhance precision, safety, and recovery for patients.
