Surrey Pushes Forward on Five Major City Projects

Surrey is making headway on five large-scale capital projects designed to expand recreation, strengthen infrastructure, and reshape growing neighbourhoods. Mayor Brenda Locke called the developments “transformative changes that will benefit residents for generations.”

Key Project Highlights

  • Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex: Two new ice sheets are complete and in use. Construction of a third NHL-sized rink, with 334 seats and space for a junior team, starts soon and finishes in 2027.
  • Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre Expansion: Construction begins this month, with completion expected in winter 2027. The expansion adds a gym, fitness centre, arts spaces, and improved seniors’ facilities.
  • Newton Community Centre: A landmark 175,000 sq. ft. facility featuring pools, gyms, and a larger library. Full construction starts in 2026, with completion by 2030.
  • Newton Town Centre Master Plan: In partnership with SCDC and TransLink, plans for 25 acres of mixed-use redevelopment with potential Bus Rapid Transit are advancing.
  • Firehall No. 6 Replacement: The firehall will be rebuilt to accommodate the Surrey–Langley SkyTrain line, with construction beginning in 2027.

Mayor Locke said these projects reflect the city’s commitment to ensuring community amenities keep pace with Surrey’s rapid growth.
