Surrey Police Focus on Distraction Thefts During Senior Safety Week

Surrey Police Service (SPS) is turning attention to a rising concern — distraction thefts — as part of National Seniors Safety Week (Nov. 6–12). The initiative aims to raise awareness and provide seniors with safety tools to help prevent these targeted crimes.

Theft Pattern and Victims

According to SPS, there have been 54 reported distraction thefts in Surrey so far this year, many involving seniors. These crimes often begin with suspects approaching victims under friendly pretenses — asking for directions or complimenting jewelry — before using distraction tactics like hugs, handshakes, or fake blessings to steal valuables or replace real jewelry with fakes.

Victims typically realize the theft only after returning home, the police noted. Offenders often target those who appear vulnerable or less likely to challenge them.

Safety Measures for Seniors

To help prevent such incidents, SPS and the City of Surrey urge residents to share safety advice with older family members. Key tips include:

  • Avoid wearing visible or expensive jewelry in public.
  • Carry minimal cash and valuables.
  • Keep personal distance and avoid physical contact with strangers.
  • Make noise or shout for help if approached suspiciously.
  • Ask for photo ID from unfamiliar service or delivery people.
  • Stay alert and aware of surroundings.
  • Walk with a friend or family member when possible.
  • Call 9-1-1 to report suspicious behavior or request assistance.
