South Surrey’s Verhnjak Pianos Strikes a Timeless Chord
For over half a century, Verhnjak Pianos has been quietly shaping the sound of Canadian music from its workshop in South Surrey’s Sunnyside Business Centre. Founded in 1974, the family-run company has become Canada’s largest piano rebuilding shop, trusted by artists and venues across the country.
Legacy of Craftsmanship
Owner Rod Verhnjak, who took over the business after his father Karl’s passing, says their reputation is built on meticulous restoration and deep respect for the instrument. The company has rebuilt pianos for legends such as Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Randy Bachman, and Jane Coop, as well as major concert venues including the Orpheum, Queen Elizabeth Theatre, and Vancouver Playhouse.
Their latest project — the full restoration of the Vancouver Playhouse’s Steinway concert grand — is already drawing praise after being moved to the Orpheum for performances.
A Family Tradition
The Verhnjak family legacy spans three generations. Founded by Karl Verhnjak, a Slovenian-born musician and symphony technician, the business grew from a backyard shop to a national leader in piano restoration. Rod’s son Brandon joined full-time in 2018, continuing the hands-on tradition of excellence.
“It takes a lot of patience and dedication,” Brandon said. “But bringing these instruments back to life makes it worth it.”
Rebuilding History, Note by Note
Each rebuild can take up to two years, with a waiting list stretching as long. The workshop restores both grand and upright pianos — from concert hall centerpieces to cherished family heirlooms. Some even retain personal touches, like signatures on old Heintzmann uprights that tell generations of stories.
“Not everything should look brand new,” Rod said. “Sometimes, those marks of history are what make the piano special.”
A Resonant Future
As long as audiences cherish the sound of a real grand piano, Verhnjak Pianos will continue to thrive. With over 1,500 followers tracking their projects online, the workshop remains a beacon of craftsmanship in an era of mass production — a sustained note of passion, precision, and legacy.
