Chilliwack’s NWO Roller Derby exceeds its $2,000 goal, raising $2,391 for the Gender Support Network during its thrilling Daze of Derby event.
Skaters Roll Big for a Good Cause
What happens when fierce competition meets community spirit? Chilliwack’s own NWO Roller Derby Association just proved that teamwork extends far beyond the track. During their annual Daze of Derby tournament, held on October 25 and 26 at the Landing Sports Centre, the league didn’t just meet its $2,000 fundraising goal—they crushed it, raising an impressive $2,391.68 for the Chilliwack Gender Support Network.
Teams From Across Borders Bring the Heat
The two-day roller derby showdown brought together 16 high-energy teams from across Western Canada and the U.S. Every whistle blow, every jam, and every cheer from the stands fueled not only competition but also compassion.
Kristy Gaunt from NWO couldn’t hide her excitement:
“That’s the most we’ve ever raised in a single tournament!”
More Than Just a Tournament
Funds poured in from every corner of the event — skater entry fees, a lively 50/50 draw, and a hilarious “hi-jinx” scrimmage that had everyone laughing. Even massages from Langara College students, offered by donation, added to the growing total. Fans and families contributed through by-donation admission, making every dollar count toward supporting local gender-inclusive initiatives.
Breaking Records and Building Community
Last year’s event raised about $1,500 — impressive, yes, but this year’s total shows just how powerful community momentum can be. Beyond the thrilling hits and high-speed races, the Daze of Derby was about something deeper: connection, inclusion, and giving back.
As the skaters hung up their helmets and the cheers faded, one thing was clear — this wasn’t just a win for the NWO Roller Derby Association. It was a victory for kindness, unity, and the spirit of Chilliwack.
