Delta unveils street banners honouring 49 local veterans
The City of Delta has launched its first “We Remember” Veteran Street Banner Program, honouring 49 local Canadian Armed Forces members with banners displayed throughout the city from Oct. 12 to Nov. 12.
Honouring service and sacrifice
Each banner features the name, photo, branch, and years of service of a veteran who was born in Delta or resided there during their military service or at their passing. The banners hang at Delta’s gateways and along key corridors, paired with poppy-adorned banners reading “We Remember.”
The program is a partnership between the City of Delta and the Royal Canadian Legion branches in Tsawwassen and Ladner, with honourees submitted by residents via the city’s Let’s Talk Delta online portal.
“We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and response,” said Robert Sullivan, Delta’s manager of Cultural Services. “It was rewarding to work with families to share their loved ones’ stories across the community.”
Community pride and reflection
Mayor George Harvie called the initiative a “powerful, visible tribute,” thanking local legions and families for helping Delta “honour those who served.”
Reception and local history event
To celebrate the program, the city will host a free reception on Thursday, Nov. 6, at Harris Barn (4140 Arthur Dr., Ladner) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The evening will include light refreshments and a presentation titled “Community Sacrifice and Heroism: Delta in WWI,” exploring the city’s wartime history.
Free tickets are available at cityofdelta.perfectmind.com.
Looking ahead
All 49 banners will return next year, with plans to honour up to 50 additional veterans in 2026. The city will review the program after two years to assess banner durability, design updates, and future expansion opportunities.
Delta’s new banners stand as a moving reminder that remembrance lives in every neighbourhood.
