Surrey man sentenced to jail for 2024 Newton house fire and assault

Mohammad Hashimi has been sentenced to 63 days in jail and probation for arson and assault in connection with a 2024 Newton house fire that trapped two people.

Surrey man sentenced for 2024 Newton house fire

A Surrey man has been sentenced to 63 days in jail for his role in a 2024 house fire in Newton that left two people trapped on a balcony before being rescued by firefighters.

The incident

The fire broke out on Oct. 18, 2024, in the 7800-block of 122 Street. Surrey Fire Service crews arrived to find two residents stranded on a balcony, who were quickly brought to safety using ground ladders.
Police later detained one man at the scene, identified as Mohammad Hashimi, who was handed over to the Surrey RCMP.

Court outcome

According to court records, Hashimi pleaded guilty on June 10, 2025, in Surrey Provincial Court to arson in relation to an inhabited property and assault with a weapon.

On Oct. 31, he was sentenced to:

  • 63 days in jail for arson
  • 36 months’ probation
  • A 10-year firearms ban
For the assault charge, he received a separate 36-month probation order and another 10-year firearms prohibition.

Other charges dropped

The Crown entered a stay of proceedings for two additional charges. This means the prosecution has suspended those charges but could reopen the case within the legally allowed period — one year for serious offences or six months for lesser ones.

The Newton fire drew significant attention in 2024, with bystanders praising firefighters for their swift rescue efforts that prevented further harm.
