Surrey Hospice Society leader Rebecca Smith announces retirement
After more than a decade of leadership, Rebecca Smith, the long-time executive director of the Surrey Hospice Society, has announced her retirement, effective Oct. 31.
Smith joined the non-profit in May 2010 and became executive director in May 2015, guiding the organization through a period of major change and community growth.
A decade of compassionate leadership
“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve this community,” Smith said in a statement. “I am profoundly grateful for the trust I’ve been given and for the incredible staff, volunteers, and partner organizations who made this work possible.”
During her tenure, Smith helped the society navigate financial challenges and an unprecedented surge in demand for hospice services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Community impact and recognition
A former president and vice president of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, Smith was celebrated as a “compassionate community builder” and “powerful public educator.”
“Rebecca’s legacy is one of immense heart and unwavering dedication,” said Pash Brar, president of the Surrey Hospice Society’s board. “She nurtured a community, not just an organization.”
Looking ahead
The society’s board has begun the search for its next executive director. The Surrey Hospice Society continues to provide support, education, and counselling for individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses, death, and bereavement.
