Surrey Police warn parents to inspect Halloween candy after a staple was found in a Reese’s cup collected in the Clayton Heights area. Investigation underway.
Parent’s Discovery Sparks Halloween Safety Warning
Surrey Police Service (SPS) is urging parents to inspect their children’s Halloween treats after a metal staple was discovered inside a piece of candy in the Clayton Heights neighbourhood. The alert follows a call made to police on Friday, November 1, after a parent found the sharp object in a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup received during trick-or-treating.
Incident Under Investigation
Officers from the Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) responded to the report shortly after 2 p.m. Police confirmed the candy had been collected in the Clayton Heights area, between 188 and 190 Streets and 70 to 72 Avenues. Investigators are now working to determine where the tainted candy originated and whether tampering occurred before or after distribution.
Police Encourage Vigilance Among Families
The SPS emphasized that while such incidents are rare, parents should take time to carefully check all Halloween treats before allowing children to consume them. “We encourage everyone to remain alert and report anything unusual,” police said in a statement.
Community Cooperation Requested
Authorities are asking residents in the affected neighbourhood to review any suspicious items or packaging their children may have collected. Anyone who finds questionable candy or related evidence is urged to contact the Surrey Police Service’s non-emergency line at 604-599-0502.
Safety Reminder After Halloween Festivities
As investigations continue, police stress that vigilance helps ensure community safety. The SPS plans to increase post-Halloween patrols and follow up with local residents to prevent further concerns. Parents are reminded that a few moments of precaution can prevent potential harm and keep Halloween celebrations safe for everyone.
