B.C. Police Watchdog Investigates After Man Hurt During Surrey Arrest

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating after a man was seriously injured during his arrest by Surrey Police on Oct. 6.

IIO Investigates After Man Injured During Surrey Arrest

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia is investigating after a man sustained a serious but non-life-threatening injury while being taken into custody by Surrey Police Service on October 6.

According to police, an officer observed a man shouting aggressively at a group of women in the 10700-block of 135A Street around 8:40 p.m. The man was subsequently arrested, during which he was injured.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident and began an investigation to determine whether police actions or inactions were connected to the injury.

IIO Investigation Process

The IIO initiates an investigation when two key conditions are met:

  1. There has been serious harm or death, as defined by the Police Act.
  2. There is a possible connection between the harm/death and police or detention guard actions.

If both criteria are satisfied, the IIO examines all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the investigation’s conclusion, the Chief Civilian Director will assess whether reasonable grounds exist to believe an offence was committed.

Witness Appeal

The IIO is requesting that any witnesses who have not yet provided statements or who may have video footage of the incident contact investigators.

  • Toll-free: 1-855-446-8477
  • Online: iiobc.ca

The investigation remains active as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the arrest and injury.
