Charity to host info session at Surrey Libraries Ocean Park Branch
Vancouver Food Runners, a non-profit dedicated to reducing food waste and hunger, is expanding its operations in Surrey. The organization will host a volunteer information session on November 12 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Surrey Libraries Ocean Park Branch (12854 17 Ave).
The charity’s mission is to redirect surplus food from local businesses to community partners that serve individuals facing food insecurity. Since launching in 2020, volunteers have delivered over 5.5 million pounds of rescued food to 140 non-profits across the Lower Mainland. In Surrey alone, this year’s rescues total more than 37,000 pounds of food worth $133,552.
Simple way to make a difference
Program manager Mahjobeh Badakhsh highlighted the impact of their work:
“Food rescue is a simple yet powerful way for individuals to support their neighbours and the planet. In under an hour, one food rescue can provide over $500 worth of food to non-profits helping families, seniors and youth.”
Partnerships and technology
The charity partners with Save-On-Foods, DashMart, and Buy-Low Foods, using a free app that connects businesses with surplus food directly to nearby social service organizations.
Local volunteer Irene shared her experience:
“Volunteering with Vancouver Food Runners lets me support the Surrey community when I have some extra time. The app makes it easy, and every interaction is friendly and positive.”
How to join
No prior experience is required. Interested participants can register for free on Eventbrite by searching “Volunteer with Vancouver Food Runners: Surrey Info Session.” Complimentary snacks and drinks will be provided during the session.
