Fleetwood Park Teacher Derek Fournier Wins National Teaching Honour
Derek Fournier, a Fleetwood Park Secondary School humanities teacher and department head, has been recognized with one of Canada’s highest honours for educators — the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
The award, presented annually by the Government of Canada, celebrates exceptional teachers who demonstrate innovation, leadership, and dedication to student success.
“I was pleasantly shocked,” Fournier said about learning he’d received the award. “It’s humbling to be recognized — but it really reflects the effort of our whole school community.”
Three Decades of Dedication
Fournier, who began teaching in 1993, has been shaping minds for over 32 years. Earlier this year, Fleetwood Park’s principal informed him that colleagues, students, and parents had nominated him, submitting a testimonial package that highlighted his commitment to inclusivity, creativity, and digital learning.
Among his many achievements is the ‘Civic Mirror’ program, a simulation-based learning initiative that teaches civic engagement and has since been adopted by other teachers at Fleetwood Park.
Building Connection Through the Classroom
For Fournier, teaching is as much about community as it is about curriculum.
“My favourite thing is when September rolls around and I meet the students for the first time,” he said. “They don’t know it yet, but we’re going to bond into a little family.”
As part of the school’s year-long humanities program, Fournier works with the same group of students throughout the academic year, emphasizing growth, empathy, and teamwork.
“Sometimes those connections take all year to form — but that’s the goal,” he added.
A Recognition Shared with the Community
Fournier learned he’d officially won the award on the first day of school in September, after receiving an email from the Prime Minister’s Office. He was asked to keep the news confidential until its public announcement in October.
“This award is certainly representative of our whole school community,” he said. “I couldn’t have achieved this without my colleagues, students, and parents.”
