“K se Kathak” Show Brings Unique Fusion of Tradition and Modernity to Surrey Arts Centre

Newton-based Nrityanjali Dance Academy presents “K se Kathak” on Nov. 9 at Surrey Arts Centre, showcasing a unique fusion of classical Kathak dance and modern expression.

Surrey to Host “K se Kathak” – A Celebration of Tradition and Innovation

The art of Kathak dance will take centre stage in Surrey this fall as Nrityanjali Dance Academy presents “K se Kathak” (“The Story of Kathak”) on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Surrey Arts Centre’s Main Stage. The show begins at 2 p.m.

Organized by the Newton-based Nrityanjali Dance Academy, the event promises a “unique fusion of tradition and modernity”, tracing the evolution of Kathak from its ancient storytelling roots to contemporary performance styles.

“K se Kathak is more than a performance—it’s a celebration of heritage, diversity, and the unifying power of the arts,” said Prajakta Trehan, artistic director and founder of the academy. “Through this event, we hope to foster cross-cultural understanding and create spaces where tradition meets innovation.”

About the Performance

Kathak, one of India’s eight classical dance forms, is known for its intricate footwork, graceful spins, and expressive hand gestures that bring ancient epics, myths, and legends to life.

The Nov. 9 showcase will highlight Kathak’s journey through time, from its early roots in temple storytelling to its refined classical identity—and finally, its dialogue with contemporary art forms.
