An authentically Canadian story lands in White Rock this week: Peninsula Productions stages Billy Bishop Goes to War from Oct. 23–26 at its Centennial Park studio theatre (14600 North Bluff Rd.). Veteran performer Damon Calderwood returns for his 17th year as Bishop, with pianist/actor Chris Robson on stage, in John MacLachlan Gray and Eric Peterson’s celebrated musical portrait of Canada’s famed WWI flying ace.
The two-hander blends sharp humour, songs, and quick-change character work—eschewing solemnity for a wry, warts-and-all look at William Avery “Billy” Bishop, whose daring tactics made him a legend and a handful for superiors. This Remembrance-season revival also speaks to questions of Canadian identity and grit, says Calderwood.
Performances run multiple times daily over the four days; tickets are on sale via Peninsula Productions/Showpass. Venue: Peninsula Studio Theatre, beside Centennial Arena.
