Humpback Whale Stuns B.C. Tourists by Saving Seal from Orcas

A humpback whale named Nike stunned B.C. whale-watchers by shielding a seal from a pod of orcas in the Juan de Fuca Strait. The rare encounter sparked debate over whether the whale’s bold act was heroism—or pure self-defense.

A humpback whale

A B.C. whale named Nike shocks onlookers by shielding a seal from orcas—an awe-inspiring moment that blurs the line between heroism and survival.

A Whale of a Show: Nature’s Drama Unfolds in B.C. Waters

In the cool waters off Sooke, British Columbia, whale-watchers witnessed a jaw-dropping marine showdown that felt straight out of a wildlife documentary. On October 4, a humpback whale named Nike stole the spotlight when he appeared to defend a harbor seal from a hungry pod of killer whales in the Juan de Fuca Strait.

The orcas, part of the T46B1 transient pod, had been closing in on their target when Nike made an unexpected entrance—charging in, splashing, and circling near a kelp bed where the terrified seal sought refuge.

“It really looked like he was protecting the seal,” shared Mollie Cameron, a guide with Sooke Coastal Explorations, who captured the encounter on video. “I’ve seen orca hunts before, but this was the first time I’ve watched Nike intervene like that.”

The Defender of the Deep

Witnesses say Nike repeatedly positioned himself between the seal and the pod of five orcas, disrupting their coordinated attack. The standoff left everyone on board speechless as the massive humpback used his size and strength to keep the predators at bay.

While Nike’s motives remain uncertain, many whale-watchers believe humpbacks recognize orcas as potential threats—not just to other species, but to themselves. “They may be protecting these animals because they see killer whales as top predators,” Cameron explained.

Heroism or Self-Defense?

Around the world, humpbacks have been seen interfering with orca hunts, sometimes rushing in to “save” seals, sea lions, or even young whales. But according to Erin Gless, executive director of the Pacific Whale Watch Association, these rescues might be less about compassion and more about caution.

“It’s unlikely Nike was doing this out of kindness,” Gless said. “Orcas have been known to prey on young humpbacks, so by disrupting a hunt, Nike could be sending a message—stay away from these waters.”

She added with a laugh, “It’s kind of like, ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend.’”

A Chase to Remember

After the seal escaped, Nike didn’t stop there. He reportedly pursued the orcas for nearly a mile, possibly trying to scare them off for good. “Watching a humpback chase a pod that included a newborn calf—it was incredible,” said Cameron.

Interestingly, not every encounter between humpbacks and orcas turns tense. Sometimes they ignore each other completely. Other times, humpbacks emit a deep “trumpeting” sound, believed to signal irritation. “They all have personalities,” Cameron added. “Some are chill, and others—like Nike—just aren’t having it.”

The Legends of the Salish Sea

Nike isn’t the only bold humpback in local waters. Another whale, fittingly named Valiant, has been spotted confronting orcas on several occasions. “She’s got rake marks from orca teeth under her tail,” Cameron noted. “I think she just has a personal grudge.”

A Moment to Remember

Whatever Nike’s reasons, the encounter left an unforgettable impression on everyone watching. “Seeing that massive humpback standing up to a family of killer whales—it gives you goosebumps,” said Cameron. “Moments like that remind you just how powerful and unpredictable nature really is.”
